Boy, this one brings back a lot of memories. What I remember about having to be in Wilmington, N.C., on Sept. 11 and the immediate days following made me quit journalism for a minute. That night in the newsroom, the city editor was cracking jokes about the Brooklyn Bridge getting blown up, people. And then after this piece ran on Sept. 20, we began getting letters to the editor about people “exploiting” the fact that they were from New York (without mentioning me by name). So much for the concept of adversity bringing us together, am I right?
